When Boyle finished, Judge Lewe instructed the jury. One of the instructions he read to them advised the jury that

as a matter of law if they find from the evidence that the accused was by threat, violence, or fear induced to make a confession, that said confession is not to be considered as evidence by the jury, and if they find that after the making of such confession the accused later made a Statement incriminating himself then you as jurors must disregard such later Statement of the accused unless you are satisfied that the former fear entertained by the accused was wholly removed before the said latter Statements were made by the accused.68
